SMWS 16 year Caol ila – 53.173 Glowing Embers on the tongue

Mashtun

On the nose we got “lite” smoke, almonds, marzipan, heather, and smoked barley. On the palate it was slightly sharp, then smoky sweet with hints of barley and orange peel. The finish was sweet with a subtle smokiness and hints of citrus fruits. Like the 12 year old standard it left us with a warm glow. Adding water to this cask strength whisky really smoothed the initial taste, sweetened the middle, and brought out a leathery warmness at the end of the finish. This has a different level of subtle aromas than the standard 12 and a longer deeper finish. It reminded us of the leather seats and open fire in the members room in the SMWS (vaults) in Leith. Fabulous dram!

Overall = 72/100
