SMWS

Mashtun notes:

On the nose this was sweet, fruity, and spicy.  We also got oak, dark chocolate, and ripe bananas! The initial taste is sharp but this soon settles into sherry, burnt sugar black forest gateau, marzipan, and dark fruits.  The finish is robust and spicy with toffee, orange, caramelised fruits, and red wine. This whisky has a stunning rusty colour and a smooth thick texture.  Letting this dram breathe does mellow it and takes away any initial sharpness. A little water opens up all the flavours of this dram and brings out tiramisu on the nose as well as cherries and dark chocolate on the palate. This dram really floated our boat! It’s fabulous whisky that captures the essence of Highland Park with the distinctness of the SMWS. It’s an attention-grabbing dram for fans of port and sherry casks.

Overall MashTun Score = 78/100

A muscle man from Orkney:

A wolf whistle and ‘hello sailor’ was all we could muster at this muscle man of a dram from Orkney. Rustic, grizzly and animalistic, he swept us up with his robust arms and carried us passed barges and oil rigs to rural lavender heather pastures. What a greeting! Thick burnt condensed coconut syrup, PX sherry, Dundee marmalade, honey glazed smoked pork buns and Demerara sugar were all unashamedly present. Smouldering and rich on the palate, our dream man presented chewy burnt toffee, Russian caramels, orange treacle and sweet dark chocolate. Water brought out a sweeter side to him: coffee liquor, sweet molasses and dried pineapple, all with a dusting of coco powder. But don’t be fooled by this softness: scorched and decadent, our palates were left with a thick, chewy finish of sherry infused raisins and dry Brazil nut skins. He knows how to treat a lady.

Nose:

Powerful ester aromas: tangerines, strawberries, almonds, chocolate, aniseed, some grassy notes. Strong oak notes suggesting a 1st or 2nd fill

Sharp at first, then dense fruit flavours. Needs a generous amount of water to take the burn out of the alcohol. Quite dry

Robust and spicy finish with sweet fruits, treacle sponge, caramelised pears and red wine

Colour:

Toffee

Texture:

Medium-full-bodied, soft after water added

More variations in the fruity complexities after air
