Caol Ila SMWS 18yr 53.201

Mashtun notes:

On the nose we got gentle peat notes, malt, lavender, grass, and subtle hints of sherry. The palate was earthy, sweet, floral, savoury, and had a hint of the seaside along with its delicate peated notes. The finish was long, earthy, and sweet. It also had a gentle hint of wood smoke and sea salt. This whisky has the colour of a light white wine and a smooth and velvety texture. Letting this dram breathe mellowed the experience and brought out slight leathery notes on the nose. Adding water brings out more ‘light’ smoke on the nose and palate and smoothes the whole dram.

This is quite simply a stunning Caol Ila from the SMWS. It’s a deliciously well rounded whisky that has flavours that both complement and contrast each other, We could have drunk way into the ‘wee small hours’, and to be honest we did! A must try!

Overall MashTun Score =  80/100

True Love on a Pebble Beach:

The nose inspired a picture – boy and girl – pebble beach, bonfire smoking – he cut his hand opening oysters – she applied bandages and iodine from first aid box; she was wearing powder puff and lavender perfume – he stole a honeyed kiss; then they spread a tarpaulin and enjoyed Lapsang souchong and sherbet straws watching the sunset. The palate was hot and intense – peppered mackerel in chilli sauce, crab with grapefruit, Edinburgh Rock, burning twigs, lobster shells, coal, soot, bandages, hot stones, smoke and liquorice – but with water, a wonderfully drinkable mix of hot-dogs, ash, carbolic and chilli chocolate from Islay’s largest distillery

Notes:  60% ABV - 2nd fill sherry butt. Around £72 per bottle at time of tasting.

Nose:

Surprisingly gentle peat notes, floral and grassy odours coming through alongside a subtle sherry nose, just the right balance

Palate:

lightly sweet and deliciously rounded palate: savoury, floral at first, then the peat kicks in followed by a sherried aftertaste with malt notes. Beautiful

Finish:

Quite lengthy, and so different from the initial taste that it demands another sip to check the palate

Colour:

Pale Yellow

Texture:

Soft and Velvety

Air:

It was gone before the air had time to affect it...

Water:

I added a few drops to take away the sharpness, it did open up the palate

Overall score and comments:

84/100 – I usually have a soft spot for a Caol Ila and I found this particularly nice. The way the palate unfolds is like the unfurling of a magic carpet, a masterly balance of flavours that both complement contrast to each other. Highly recommended
