Bowmore 16yr SMWS 3.225

Mashtun notes:

On the nose this almost had the feel of a Laphroaig PX! It had a little more depth though with sweet sherry and peat smoke combining with a seaside breeze to produce a fantastic fragrance. The taste didn’t disappoint either with sherry, sea-salt, dark fruits, and a subtle hint of dark chocolate and orange. It has a long smoky spicy aftertaste that has a salty end to it. The whisky is a beautiful golden amber colour and has a great mouth feel… Letting this dram breathe mellows the nose while adding water brings out the sherry notes and spices the dram up a little.

This whisky was right up our street and is another great example of a SMWS Bowmore. If you like a smoky whisky with a little sherried sweetness, then give this one a try!

Overall MashTun Score = 78/100

Bowmore 16yr SMWS 3.225

SMWS name: Galleon attacked by pirates

The nose of cigars, fruits, spices, coffee, smoke, charred wood, sea spray, tarry rope and gunpowder suggests a pirate attack. The taste is rich and dark – Van Nelle tobacco, dunnage warehouse, fruit-cake, toffee, ginger, earthy peat, coal-tar and coffee with After Eights.

Notes: 57.2% ABV – SMWS 16 year old Bowmore (sister cask of the SMWS 3.227). Ex sherry butt. 617 bottles produced and £70 per bottle at time of tasting

Bowmore 16yr SMWS 3.225

Nose:

Sweet TCP… This almost has the feel of the Laphroaig PX! Sweet sherry with salt and peat smoke

Palate:

Sweet TCP, peat, dark chocolate, and a hint of sea-salt and cordite. It’s also really smooth for a cask strength whisky

Finish:

Medium to long

Colour:

Dark gold

Texture:

Thick

Air:

Opens up nose and palate

Water:

Adding water brings out seaweed, sherry, lifts the ‘TCP’ sensation, and also adds a hint of white pepper

Overall score and comments:

79/100 – Fantastic Bowmore from the SMWS that has slight similarities to Laphroaig’s travel only PX offering.

Bowmore 16yr SMWS 3.225

Nose:

I took this to be a PX Cask (blind). The peat nose is quite subtle

Palate:

Strawberry and raspberry, smooth and satisfying sherry notes

Finish:

Spicy aftertaste, not too long, holds savoury notes

Colour:

Dark gold

Texture:

Dry mouthfeel

Air:

Mellows nose

Water:

Water brings out peppery notes on the palate

Overall score and comments:

78/100 – Very interesting to taste two drams of the same spirit both matured in identical 2nd fill sherry casks, each stored at different parts of the warehouse: the difference in flavour is quite astounding. This one has the edge for me, reminds me of Laphroaig PX.

Bowmore 16yr SMWS 3.225

Nose:

Wiffs of sherry and smoke, and that characteristic seaside breeze

Palate:

Wee hint of sherry, malt, salt, smoke and tangerine peel

Finish:

Smoky timber with tangy salty end (very pleasant!)

Colour:

Golden Amber

Texture:

Light and oily

Air:

Didn’t get the chance to affect it!

Water:

Opens the nose up to push the sherry to the forefront which then abates to toffee

Overall score and comments:

77/100 - A very braw Bowmore offering from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. This dram had plenty going on that kept my enjoyment going all the way to the end.
