Glentauchers 5yr old Duncan Taylor
Mashtun notes:
This is an unusual dram that was bought on a bit of a ‘whim’ to be honest. It was always going to split the panel and that’s exactly what it did. On the nose we got deep sherry, caramel, timber, vanilla, almonds, and a slight hint of bubble-gum! The palate had red liquorice, sweet honey, sherry, banana, and Madeira wine. The finish was big but medium in length with red liquorish, orange peel, sherry, and other fruity notes. The colour is a stunning rusty red and it has a thick texture. Letting this dram breathe softens the initial flavours, mellows the dram, and brings out vanilla. The panel were split as to how much water was required but adding a little does bring out more of a whisky feel on this big sherried dram.
Overall this is a very smooth whisky considering its 55.2% ABV. It’s not something we could drink all night but it is certainly something we all enjoyed. It’s very much for the sherried cask lover and is a very sweet and full bodied dram.
Overall MashTun Score = 71/100

Nose:
Sherry, toffee, and hints of bubblegum
Palate:
Red liquorice, hints of aniseed, sherry, and slight Madeira wine notes. Very smooth for a 55.2% whisky! Dominated by the sherry though
Finish:
Medium and big sherry with red liquorice
Colour:
A stunning rusty gold
Texture:
Thick
Air:
Softens the initial flavours and brings out sweet vanilla
Water:
It doesn’t need a lot but it brings out more red liquorice and takes away some of the sweetness. It also softens the finish
Overall score and comments:
70/100 – This could easily be too sherried for some. It’s a decent sherried offering from Duncan Taylor but very much for the sherried cask lover. It tastes like a first fill sherry cask and doesn’t have many whisky notes!

Orange peel, Satsuma’s, and a salty end

67/100 – A nice dram that some may find too sherried. I would have had this in a virgin oak cask for a while before releasing.
