Mashtun notes:

Dailuine (Gaelic for green valley) is in Speyside and is one the SMWS go-to drams for us. On the nose we got cut grass, floral notes, vanilla, strawberry syrup, and oak. The palate gave us sweet tangy wood, American cream soda, fruit, honey, and those sherbet flying saucers we had when we were kids! The finish was long and sweet but dry at the end… It also managed to be tangy in the middle somehow! The whisky itself was a light golden colour with a soft and creamy texture… Letting this dram breathe made the nose sweeter and creamer, and brought out more fruity notes. We only added a little water but it brought out hints of bourbon as well as dark fruits and cut grass. It even reminded one of the panel of the smells associated with sitting by the river on a nice summers day. Another said it was like eating bag of assorted sweets…

All in all this dram was a bit of a journey, but at some point during the journey you will be sure to find something you like.

Classic – Barley Meets Oak

The nose represents a classic meeting of barley and oak – complex sweetness (honey and raisin flapjacks, Cheerios, Cadbury’s Whole Nut, chocolate-coated foamy bananas) and pleasant woody notes (new bedroom furniture, polished cedar). If sweetness dominates oak on the nose, the palate reverses this – honey sweetness swells on silky textures, but oak delivers gentle ginger and sweet chilli spice, barrel staves and balsamico. With water, the nose becomes grassy – sunshine on hay bales and boxed breakfast cereal. The reduced palate is deep, penetrating and rewarding, with the bitter-sweet character of balsamic strawberries, marmalade, Jaffa cakes and vitamin C on malt extract.

Notes: 58.2 % ABV – SMWS 9 year old Dailuaine. 580 bottles produced and £55 per bottle at time of tasting.

Like eating a bag of assorted boiled sweets, it’s a vibrant, fruity and creamy dessert dram. The aftertaste lets it down a little: too perfumey for me.
